An Ode to My Dad
Life with Don Skousen has surprises galore
And that is a must in the one who'll be may-yor.
His surprises are grand. His surprises are funny.
Sometimes they are clever. Sometimes they cost money.
Though these surprises have been really quite plentiful,
I only have time here to tell just a handful.
Let's start with the musical rag doll named Ann
surreptitiously left, at age four--I'm a fan.
Then there was the time, Don flying a plane
With Hal and with Gerry altitude we did gain.
Up high in the air he feigned heart distress
Their look of pure dread really was priceless.
I remember the day that my wedding dress sold,
Sacrifices are necessary as one grows old.
But several years later to me it returned
A gift given back to me that I hadn't earned.
We talked on the phone the day Sydnee was born,
It would be great to see you, my heart was torn.
Then into the room stepped Don and Mary.
In a red convertible, home, us they did carry.
These surprises extend to all, not just to me.
Just ask his doctor then you will see.
Who acts like they're dead, falls off the table?
My Dad will play jokes for as long as he's able.
Golf lessons, toilets on lawns, surprise trips.
False recommendation letters* and watery tips.
Bouquets of flowers, restaurants that serve lard,
tires on cars, carefully placed weeds in a yard.
The surprises come with a great sense of humor.
He keeps us laughing and happy despite any rumor.
The ability to make life fun, not a dread,
Makes him perfect for Mayor-Just use your head, (Dammit).
